Southern Tunisia

|
106th
Tunisia

Why Tunisia? Because it's Star Wars Day, obviously! Many of the desert scenes set in Tatooine were filmed in the south – you can still visit the sun-bleached remains of Mos Espa and Luke Skywalker's childhood home near Nefta.

Expect guided tours, fan pilgrimages and full geek-out potential around May 4th. Even if you're not a lightsaber-wielding superfan, the Saharan landscapes are dramatic enough to make any trip feel epic.

If you're thinking of heading to Tunisia, keep in mind that it scores poorly on the Holiday Extras Good Trip Index – our guide to travelling ethically, sustainably and well. LGBTQI+ travel is particularly concerning, as same-sex sexual activity is illegal. Plus there are areas of Tunisia that the FCDO advises against travelling to, so keep up to date with the latest advice and plan your trip carefully.

Andalusia | Spain

|
18th
The Cathedral in Jerez de la Frontera | Andalusia

It'll no doubt be gorgeous wherever your holiday to Andalusia takes you. But if we had to pick anywhere for 2025, it would be Jerez. New Jet2 routes mean it's never been easier to explore this sun-baked corner of southern Spain. Andalusia's white towns, flamenco heartlands and golden beaches are all in reach, and there'll likely be fewer crowds than Seville or Málaga.

After devastating floods in late 2024, tourism is a great way to support local recovery efforts. Come for the sherry tastings, Moorish architecture and sunshine that'll make you think it's summer.

Madeira | Portugal

|

Madeira

If you want to get a jump on summer, Madeira's got you. Average highs are nudging into the 20s by mid-May, and the island's volcanic cliffs, levada walks and garden-filled hillsides are at their lushest.

It's far enough south to guarantee sun but close enough for an easy escape. There are some beaches, but that's not why you visit Madeira – the views are the main event, whether you're admiring mountainous terrain or gazing out to sea.

Taiwan

|
22nd
Turtle in Turkey

Taiwan's calendar is packed in May. The World Masters Games run from the 17th to the 30th, drawing tens of thousands of international athletes, while the Dragon Boat Festival brings colour, energy and boatloads of history to rivers across the country.

Add night markets, mountains, dumplings and temples – and Taiwan's a full-on cultural feast. It's also perfect for first-timers to Asia, with great public transport and a super welcoming vibe.

Freiburg | Germany

Old street in Freiburg

Freiburg is what happens when sustainability meets storybook charm. All cobbles, canals and solar panels, this Black Forest city is full of eco-innovations – from trams that glide over grass tracks to neighbourhoods run entirely on renewable energy.

And it's pretty. Like, properly pretty. Think pastel houses, lazy streams, and forest walks that start five minutes from the city centre.

Basel | Switzerland

|
4th
Rhine River, Basel

Switzerland's hosting Eurovision this year, and Basel is the lucky city. With the final on the 17th, expect flags, glitter and music everywhere. It's the perfect excuse for a spring city break – especially in a place that's already big on culture and arty cool.

Make time for the Kunstmuseum, the old town's crooked streets, and maybe a cheeky day trip across the border – France and Germany are just a tram ride away.

Denmark

Colourful houses in Copenhagen

Denmark has topped our Good Trip Index for 2025 – and it's not hard to see why. From its world-beating cycling infrastructure to its clean energy leadership and inclusive social values, Denmark is doing holidays right.

Base yourself in Copenhagen for a city break that's as cool as it is conscious. You'll find organic restaurants, zero-waste shops, and hotels that actually walk the sustainability walk. Cruise the harbour by electric boat, pedal past colourful townhouses, and toast your trip with a locally brewed beer under the late-setting May sun.

Whether you're in it for the eco credentials or just want a really good smørrebrød, Denmark delivers.
